Forest Lot: Sustainable Management Evaluations

The 369-acre section of Ferguson Properties has undergone the following evaluations to qualify for the MFTIP:

1997: The first evaluation was done by Eleanor Reed, Registered Professional Forester #1528, and her recommendations were carried out.

2004: The forest was re-evaluated by Clayton Roberts, Certified Tree Marker, Tree Seed Collector, and Hardwood Lumber Grader. The number of living, deciduous/hardwood trees with a diameter of 10 cm or greater was totalled at 100,828.

2008: A 20-year plan was developed by Eleanor Reed, consisting of a 10-year management program and a 5-year progress report. Her evaluation is paraphrased below:

The owners’ objectives are mainly environmental protection, providing a sanctuary for wildlife, recreational benefits such as hiking and ski trails for cottagers, and the ecological benefits of clean air and water. Cottagers have observed or heard 115 species of birds. Animals that have been sighted or left tracks include: deer, moose, bears, wolves, foxes, lynx, minks, otters, fish, raccoons, rabbits, chipmunks, and beavers.

2009/2010: According to recommendations, trees will be planted in the former beaverpond. To support the regeneration of this “uneven-aged” forest, some stands of mature trees will also be thinned in order to allow younger trees to grow.
